Winnie-the-Pooh, also called Pooh Bear, is a fictional character soft toy in the form of a bear produced by English author A. A. Milne. The first collection of stories about the character was the book Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), and this was followed by The House at Pooh Corner (1928). The Pooh stories have been translated into many languages, including Alexander Lenard’s Latin translation, Winnie ille Pu, which was first published in 1958, and, in 1960, became the only Latin book ever to have been featured on The New York Times Best Seller list. In common film editions, Pooh has been voiced by performers Sterling Holloway, Hal Smith, and Jim Cummings in English, and Yevgeny Leonov in Russian. In the Milne books, Pooh is simple and unintelligent, but he is also friendly, kind, and firm. Though he and his friends approve that he “has no Brain”, Pooh is sometimes admitted to have a clever idea, usually motivated by common sense. These include riding in Christopher Robin’s umbrella to save Piglet from a flood, discovering “the North Pole” by picking it up to help fish Roo out of the river, discovering the game of Poohsticks, and saving Eeyore out of the river by tumbling a large rock on one side of him to wash him near the bank. Pooh is also a talented writer, and the stories are often interrupted by his poems and “hums.” Although he is humble about his slow-wittedness, he is contented with his creative gifts. Pooh is very warmhearted of food, mainly “hunny”, but also condensed milk and other items. Pooh is very social. Next to Christopher Robin, his closest friend is Piglet, and he best often picks to spend his time with one or both of them. But he also usually visits the other animals, often eyeing for a snack or listeners for his poetry as much as for company. His thoughtfulness means he goes out of his way to be friendly to Eeyore, visiting him and getting him a birthday present and building him a house, regardless of getting habitually aloofness from Eeyore in return. The characters of the story are Pooh – The Main Character, Piglet – Pooh’s best friend, Tigger – Pooh’s bubbly friend with stripes both orange and black, Eeyore – Pooh’s donkey friend who gets very blue at certain times, Christopher Robin – The eight-year-old boy in the sequence with toy animals.
